Your own steady observation, held across weeks, captures something it cannot — and when the two disagree, that observation is not the thing to discard.

There is a a more difficult reason this matters. Steady decline is, strangely, easier to hold in mind than uneven improvement. When progress arrives in increments — and especially when it falls short of the full normalcy a person may have hoped for — it can quietly stir a mix of hope and despair in face of uncertainty.
